Where are Lilian Jones products manufactured?

All our products (unless specified) are hand crafted in our workshops in the beautiful Cotswold countryside.

How ‘natural’ are Lilian Jones products?

All Lilian Jones products are formulated to be as ethical and as close to natural as possible, with a range of candles and cosmetics that are 100% natural as well as using fragrances approved for cosmetic use.

All our candles are manufactured from plant-based waxes – including non-GM soy, rapeseed and coconut wax. We do not use paraffin in our candles nor do we use beeswax. Our candles are all vegan and our skincare is made from natural oils and butters (see below).

We use a range of Fragrance Oils (FO) and Essential Oils (EO) to give our products their wonderful scent.

Why don’t you use paraffin wax?

Although paraffin wax is a by-product of the petrochemical industry, it is chemically treated further to make it white and acceptable to candle makers; vegetable based waxes are, in contrast smokeless and soot free but we recognise that they too are highly processed to create the waxes we use.

Rapeseed wax, which is produced and harvested in the UK, is renewable, sustainable and biodegradable. As it comes from the UK, it undergoes fewer air miles, improving its carbon footprint further.

Why do you use synthetic FOs at all, surely they aren’t ethical?

Lilian Jones’ aim is to be as ethical and natural as we possibly can be, whilst creating luxurious products that people want to buy.

Although EOs are 100% natural, we are uncomfortable with the agricultural processes involved in their creation  – did you know it takes 40 rose heads to create one drop of rose essential oil? Or that many ‘natural’ essential oils are created by the use of solvents to extract the precious fragrance? We believe that these processes are not sustainable simply for Western commercial desires and started to search early on for high quality perfume fragrances.

FO are synthetic fragrances created in a laboratory to be as close as possible to the real thing, many are created using nature identical compounds to create a substitute which is less harmful to the environment. We recognize that some people do not like or are allergic to, some synthetic perfumes which is why we also offer a range of 100% natural products which contain no ‘perfume’, only essential oils.

However, we also recognise that many of the ‘allergens’ present in FO are also present in EO i.e linalool, limonene etc. which is why we are formulating and testing a new range that will be ‘allergen free’.

Why is each candle slightly different?

All Lilian Jones’ candles are handcrafted and hand poured in small batches. Each batch is subject to strict quality control but as they are not mass-produced each candle is unique.

Where vintage glass is used for candles or skincare, each piece is a one-off or a small limited edition and no two will ever be the same.

Are your products or any of the ingredients used in the products tested on animals?

Please see our Ethics page – we do not test on animals and do not use ingredients that are tested on animals.  We have a strict policy with our suppliers and do not use suppliers who wholesale to China.

Are your products suitable for vegetarian/vegans?

All our products are suitable for vegans and vegetarians and do not contain any animal by-products whatsoever.

I am allergic to nuts/milk etc – can I use your products?

All our products are created in a workshop where nuts or milk may be used but we do not manufacture products containing allergens at the same time as allergy free ones.  Please note, we do use Sweet Almond Oil at the present time in some of our skin care – these products will be clearly marked. This will be phased out in 2018.

How long do your products last?

Our standard tin candles or votives generally burn for a minimum of 15 hours, but this is affected by the location in which they are burnt and the length of the initial burn. Candle fragrances usually last around 12 months but it will vary according to the location in which it is stored.

Skincare and soaps have a shelf life of around 12 months – please see individual products for more specific information.
