So many ideas so little time – or why does it take us so long..?

So, as some of you may have realised we have LOADS of new ideas here at LJ, lots and lots of new ideas all the time. Some make it to production, some make it to focus group and some never see the light of day once they have been explained or shown to someone! Trouble is, the difficulty with getting all creative with soap or bath bombs etc is, as fast as you come up with a new idea you suddenly realise that that great idea becomes yet another one that will need a Cosmetic Safety Assessment done and so it usually gets put on the back burner until all ten of the variations are confirmed, the packaging is researched and delivered and the labels are back from the printers.  (more…)...

The times they are changin’

Having spent most of yesterday avoiding social media and the news, its time to come out from under the duvet, pull up our socks and get on with the new world order! We don't usually do politics on our feed at Lilian Jones as we respect that for every opinion we personally hold there will be several hundred (at least) who hold opposing views - and we have no wish to get involved in a trollfest! So we are not commenting publicly on the political changes in the USA nor the forthcoming changes that will impact the UK with Brexit. (more…)...

Lush-dupes

So what and why do Lush-dupes exist?  Or Jo Malone-dupes?  Or The White Company-dupes? So many smaller wax sellers on Etsy and Instagram now seem to sell Lush-dupes (and Jo Malone and White Company); now I get why they do it but really why....how can you honestly say you have created your own business when any success is built solely on the back of someone elses creativity? Not to mention their money, research and copyright! I know that there are only so many ways to create a fragrance or colour and that people manufacture them BECAUSE they smell like Lush etc but, surely if you had any morals or ethics you would at least call them by your own name rather than rip off someone elses? Dont get me wrong I am no fan of Lush and certainly none of the companies mentioned need me to stick up for them - what I am standing up for is all the small-scale indie-sellers out there...

Is your candle legal? Part 2

So this is something we did a while back and I thought that perhaps it would benefit from being revisited and updated. Everything below is still an up to date assessment of candle labels for UK and EU sales but given the popularity of fragrance blends, overpours and embeds I thought it would be useful to add an update on how these should be labelled. Ethics, integrity and honesty….in soap?

Ethics, integrity and honesty….in soap?

Right, first things first, Ethical and Natural is what we do, who we are and our ethics are the bedrock of our business. We care about our products and we would love the world to know how amazing we are BUT....we dont have a huge marketing budget nor do we have a tame PR on speed dial so its down to good old me LilyLou to try and get the world to wake up and understand that good skincare or candles dont have to cost the earth, literally. And natural doesn't always mean ethical. Love and health LilyLou  ...

Who are you….and why….?

We know there are hundreds or thousands of small local producers out there; hobby crafters and small businesses (as well as huge multi nationals) who sell similar products to us, so why should you buy from Lilian Jones.com? All of our products are designed, formulated and tested with love and care as its really important to us that everything we sell is exactly the type of products that we would buy ourselves. However, we know that not all products are created equal; not all products are assessed for safety despite it being an EU law to protect consumers. Not all candles we have seen are legally compliant and not all sellers understand why they are breaking the law. In the last week we have witnessed beauty and lifestyle bloggers extolling the virtue of illegal products; we have seen green products touted as the next new thing (without any claims or analysis of how many nasties it contains) and we have seen so many...

We’re back!

After a much needed break, a social media rethink and a mammoth session creating products we are finally back online. So whats been happening whilst we have been away? We've had a lovely birthday celebration, visited amazing places in the UK and created some fantastic new products. But significantly..well at least for social media...we have had a huge rethink about what we post and how. About how we engage with the campaigns that matter the most to us, about how make a difference in the world and how we influence people to care more about animals and their environment. We can all make a huge difference by taking one simple step but many of us think its either too hard, too complicated or just too expensive - we are going to try to change those thoughts. Its easier than ever to go cruelty free without compromise and we can all change how animals are treated by making sure we are educated about what really...

Twitter – brands, ethics and cruelty free. Is it all just the same-old, same-old?

We love the immediacy of Twitter and the conversations you can see develop with businesses, customers etc but does Twitter even work for a smallish, newish brand? Does it have a marketing point or is it a better space for pressure groups? Our weekly PR strategy meeting threw up so many BIG questions! Without doubt there is a sense that the cruelty free, green, beauty Twitter space is occupied by the same names promoting the same brands with no real questions being asked as to their green credentials.  Everyone is aware of the marketing budgets available to huge companies such as Lush or NYR and yet these are the names that get quoted as being the most green/ethical available.  Occasionally someone will call them out for one point or another but in reality its shouting in the wind. Lilian Jones is not huge, we don't have a huge marketing budget and, like many of our amazing artisan UK competition, we produce products as...
